Thursday

On Thursday next Feilding will be en fete if the weather is at all propitious. The first item on the bill of fare will be the BOROUGH ELECTION, which will commence with the opening of the poll at 9 a.m. The four candidates are well known to the burgesses, and it is almost impossible to form an opinion as to which of them will be the favorites. The return of Messrs Goodbehere and P. Thomson appears certain, but it is difficult to arrive at a " concensus of public opinion " as to whether Mr Evans or Mr Worsfold will be the favored one for the third place. The friends of both are doing a quiet canvass, which will make its influence apparent when the "numbers are up." For ourselves we strongly support the candidature of Mr Goodbekere, who has always proved himself a most efficient councillor, and I diligent in the work he hasundertaken ' to do. We have differed with him on j minor points connected with municipal matters, but these have not in anyway tended to lessen the value we place on his services to the burgesses. Mr P. Thomson will be a valuable addition to the Council. He is utterly without i fear, and is not a respecter of parsons; ' he has the courage of his opinions to which he is apt to giro vigorous and somewhat eruptive expression, but a : discreet chairman always receives, his, respectful attention. .His views, may \ occasionally 'seem crude, but when they are analysed a basis of strpng practical- common sense" is always discevere 1. in them. We are satisfied that he has only the good of the burgesses at heaii when he ahpws that he is prepared to accept the risks which; surro md a tradesman in the Borough Council. Mr H. Worsfold jhas " dons the state some service", in a quiet and unassuming mariner that has tamed the respect of everyone. ' Mr Thpinas. Evans is an untried man

in public life, but he has a host of private friends who know his many Stirling good qualities, and will welcome him as a plucky volunteer at atime when too little eagerness is shown to take part in the municipal work by those from whom better things might be expected. The two last named candidates will essentially represent the working men of the Borough, and for that reason alone one both of them | is certain to be returned if they are . loyally supported.

THE POT7LTKY AND PRODUCE SOCIETY. The work of the Secretary will begin at 6-30 a.m. and he will receive exhibits up to noon. As we have knowledge of entries, to all the classes, from every part of the very extensive district within the sphere of the operations of the Show, viz., Oroua, Bam- ' gitikei, and Manawatu counties, we may safely predicate a brilliant success. The numerous special prizes will of themselves tend greatly to the attractions otherwise offered by the Show. The judges' awards will be made early in the day, so as to enable the public to be admitted as soon after midday as possible. The Feilding Brass Band will attend at the Hall during the evening. They have prepared a most excellent programme of pieces, which they will render at intervals with their usual good taste and skill

HALCOMBE & SHEKWIIJi's STOCK SALK will commence at the advertised time 1 p.m. sharp to get through the work with despatch, but at the same time with a due regard to the interests of the vendors, and the convenience of buyers. We publish the catalogue on our third page, and commend its contents to our readers. A reference has already been made to this sale in our local columns.
