The Manchester Rifles
The officers and men of the above corps met at the Public. Hall on Thursday evening last. After a brief spoil at drill the annual' meeting was held.
The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmod. The secretary, Col. sergt. Nicholas, presented the balance sheet, with a statement of assets and liabilities, duly audited by Mr James Beattie. ' These were read and adopted. The following members of the corps were elected to form the Council ' for the ensuing year :— Sergt Evans, "i&ttpls Humphries and Roe, vols Kir- ' ton, Chamberlain and Gosling. * : '-' Col. sergt Nicholas was proposed as '*" secretary by vol. Gosling who spoke '"in high 1 terms of the care and diligence Bi£i eiercis&a by sergt Nicholas in the performance of his difficult and oner* ous duties. Vol'Kirton briefly sec* " onded the* proposition, which, was "' : ' carried unanimously.
' Sergt Nicholas in reply thanked the corps for the confidence they had in J ' him, and said he hoped he would always deserve it. At the conclusion of his remarks he was loudly cheered.
It was resolved that the anniversary of the corps be celebrated by a ball, the detail? of which were left entirely in the hands of the council.
This being all the business the meeting was closed in the usual way and the men dismissed.
