At the B.M. Court this morning II rs Nieholls, the wife of a labour at the Upper Hatt, was charged with having, on the 18th August, committed a breach of the Public Works Act by placing her ohild oa the railway line. The magis* trate thought the ease was one of carelessness, and as the woman had had trouble enough to make her more caatieas in future, he dismissed the ease. This Day.
The Wellington Hospital Commission commenced sitting this morning, and is open to the Press. It it understood that Dr Chilton will refuse to give evidence he having taken proceedings against the Government for alleged wrongful dismissal.
An eid man, aged 80 years, named Tayler, who was ene of the promoters ef the eight hours system in the colonies, is dead.
A mas named James Walden has been arrested on a charge of being implicated in the tarring case at the Hutt.

A mennter meeting in connection with the formation of the tfelson branch ef the East and West Coast Railway League nu held to-night, when the several resolatiom were earned amid it cheers, and great enthusiasm prevailed. A strong representative committee was elected, and a large number signed a pledge to further the objects of the league, and paid a shilling each as entrance fee. M r Pratt was in the chair, and amongst the speakers were the Bishop of Nelson and eountrv residents.
