The Borough Council

♦ Oh Thursday next it will be necessary for the burgesses to nominate three or more of the ratepayers to fiU the three vacancies in the Council made by the retirement of Councillors Bartholomew, Goodbehbbe, and Wobsfoij). At this time of writing we can understand that some diffidence may be shown, and a scarcity of candidates obtain. The perils of Councillorsbip, as shown in the legal actions now pending against certain of them in Wanganui and Falmerston, may, and no doubt wj'l, exercise a deterrent effect. As these cases are sub judice we cannot ! now say anything about them. It is, j however, quite within our province to ' submit an opinion that those Councillors who .may be elected to the Fei] fling Borough Council are not at all likely to be subjected to similar annoyances. We understand that Messrs Goodbehkbk and Wobsfold may offer themselves for re-election, but Mr J. Bartholoxbw will not do so, as he is not able to spare the time necessary for the fulfilment of the duties to his satisfaction. We shall regret this as he has proved himself to be a most excellent and painstaking member. The names of Messrs C. i Brown, G-. Cbiohton, P. Thomson, J. Newman, and F. Tbaiw suggest themselves as burgesses who «ught to come forward voluntarily, or who should be invited by requisition to be put in nomination. They are all held in high esteem as residents, and from their several positions in the Borough their fellow ratepayers have a right to expect that they should take a more active part in the management of its affairs. Mr P. Thomson is the ouly

one who has in the past taken a share j in the work; the others have held themselves almost entirely aloof. We hope the hint will be taken, and that the names of some of the burgesses ' mentioned above will appear on the list of candidates on Thursday. We may remark in passing that Messrs Goodbehere and Woksfold have done their duty as Councillors in a manner calculated to earn the respect and confidence of the ratepayers, and if they stand again will find themselves well placed on the poll.
