The German Government has expressed its willingness to fully consider the claims of Spain to the Caroline Islands, with a view to tha amicable settlement of the differences existing ©a the subject. Sir Harry St. Geerge Ord, G.C.M.G., has died suddenly in Germany. In 1887' he was Governor of Western Australia, but retired towards the end of 1879. A great meeting was held in Hyde Park to aensider the question of protection of girls. The German corvette Augusta, bound for Australia, has foundered at sea, and 230 of her crew hare been drowned. The Australian mails, dated Melbourne, July 14th, per P. & O. Steam Navigation Company's R.M.S. via Brin- \ disi, were delivered here to-day. The demobilisation of the Army Reserve has been commenced in accordance with the announcement recently made by the Secretary for War. A land corporation of Western Australia, with a capital of £100,000, has been registered. Caibo, August 24. Since the evacuation of New Dongola by the British troops, the Arabs have returned in great force, and the town is now occupied by fully four thousand derrishei. Received August 27. 1-30 a.m. Alexandbia, August 25. The troops who are under orders to return Home embarked to-day tor England. Aden, August 25. The steamer Tuna (sic) bound from Shields to Napier ran ashore near here, and is expected to become a total wreck. The crew ha ye abandoned the vessel and landed here. London, August 26. News is to hand stating that the Indian (query Italian) flag has been hoisted at Port John on the east coast of Africa to the northward of Zanzibar. The London Gazette contains the announcement of distinctions conferred upon officers who served in recent campaign at Soudan. Lieut Col. Richardson, created companion of Bath, while Major Spalding has the companionship St. Michael and St. George.
