Industrial Exhibition
The Home Industrial Branch of the Wellington Exhibition was opened on Saturday last by His Excellency the Governor. Various Volunteer corps formed a guard of honor and kept the main entrance clear for the passage of the Vice-regal party. About 2500 persons were present. His Excellency and suite were conducted to the ceremonial hall by the Mayor and members of the Exhibition Committee. After a few necessary preliminaries, the inaugural cantata written and composed by Mr 0. S. Thomas, was reudered in a a most successful manner, and at the conclusion the assembly showed their appreciation by loudly calling for Mr Thomas, who bowed his acknowledgements. Sir Julius Yogel made a lengthy speech, in which, after referring to the success achieved by Mr Thomas, he spoke of the special features of the branch of the Exhibition opened that day. Sir William Jervois then addressed the assemblage and declared the Home Industry branch duly opened. His Worship the Mayor called for three cheers for His Excellency which were heartily responded to. The Governor called for three cheers for Mr Thomas which concluded the business.
