Feilding Borough Council

An •rdinary meeting of the Borough. Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening last. Present — Councillors Thompson (in the chair), Eade, Nicholas, Bishop, Worsf old, Fowles, Richardson, and Bartholomew.

The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed.

Correspondence was read as follows : — E. and C.A. Corporation, a memorandum of agreement between the said Corporation and, the Council for the lease of a site for the Borough Pound for seven years; Mr Lyne, renewal of an application to the Council to do something in the matter of the road to his store; Public Works Committee, a report that they had erected s fence to the gravel pit on the Maldno road at the cost of £4.

Resolved, That Crs Nicholas and Fowles be authorized to sign the agreement of the lease for the pound submitted by the E. and C.A. Corporation. A. conversation took place on the matter of Mr Lyne's application for a road to his store, and repairs to the bridge. Cr Thompson urged that the application be granted if possible.

Cr Bartholomew did not see why this work should be done in preference to some others which he considered quite as important. Many other ratepayers had a right to have similar work done.

Cr Worsfold strongly opposed the application on the ground of want of funds, as if Mr Lyne did the work he would have to be paid some day, although he offered to wait for a time. He thought the application had better lie on the table.

Cr Nicholas was of the same opinion.

Gr Fowles said no one there had Any objection to the work being dona if it could be paid for.

Cr Thompson proposed, and Cr Eade seconded, That the Public Works Committee report on the two bridges near Mr Lyne's, to the next meeting of the Council- Carried.

Gr Bishop proposed, and Cr Eade seconded, That the roadman report to the clerk particulars of all work done and when, and that the clerk keep a memo of the report to read at each meeting of the Council.

Crs Eade and Bishop supported the motion. They thought it would be more satisfactory to the Council and the burgesses generally if the work done from time to time be duly reported to the Council as well as to the Public Works Committee.

Cra Worsfold and Nicholas did not see that such a course was necessary as the reports of the Public Works and Finance Committees would show what work was done and how the money was expended.

Grßichardson thought the resolution would only be similar to one already pawed that the roadman report his work to the Public Works Committee.

The motion being withdrawn it was resolved on the motion of Cr Bishop, seconded by Cr Eade, That the roadman's report be read at each meeting of Council.

Cr Nicholas proposed, and Cr Worsfold seconded, That the Cemetery Committee be asked to report at the next meeting of the Council as to the steps they deem necessary to be taken to place the approaches to the cemetery in a proper condition, and the probable cost of the same.

Gr Eade strongly supported the motion, as, it was high time the Cemetery Committee did something in the matter. He thought they were a sleepy committee who ever they were.

After a little conversation the motion was carried.

Resolved, That the name of Cr Eade be added to the Cemetery Committee.

Cr Thompson thought it was time the Council began to take some Bteps with reference to the expenditure of the next instalment of the loan. Several Gra were of the same opinion. Cr Fowles proposed, and Cr Nicholas seconded, That tenders be invited for the post of engineer to the Council, tenders to be received at the next meeting. Carried. Besolved, That Crs Thompson, Bartholomew, Nicholas, Worfold, Fowles and Bichardson be appointed a committee to prepare the terms of agreement, and other particulars, for the post of engineer. Besolvfcd, That the lamp at the ' ' door of the Council Chambers be disResolved, That the Town Clerk

- writ© to Mr T. P. James requesting '- r lum -to remove forthwith certain ? i^bstrnctions from a ditch in'Churcher street, and inform him that otherwise £he by-law will be enforced. Besolved, That the tenders for the post of engineer be advertised for twice in the Feilduto Stab, Sangitikei Advocate and Manawatu Times. This was all the business, and the Council then adjourned.

Mr Gilmer, the secretary of the Choral goeiety, notifies elsewhere that the usual ' weekly meeting will be held on Monday next ' - •
