Railway Sidings
"We learn from the Wellington correspondent of the Dunedin Star that.— Messrs Cowan, Joyce, Hatch, and G. F. Richardson waited on the Minister for Public Works on Monday and represented to him that a strong feeling exists in the Southland district against the imposition of rentals for sidings where none had previously had been charged, and pointed out that the present time of depression was especially unfavorable for such extra charge. The Minister replied that where the original periods of agreement were ten years, and these have not run out, no charge would be i levied, but that on their expiry some contribution would be required. As far as the new sidings went of course there would be an immediate charge. From a railway point of view their multiplication was objectionable, they involving both danger and large expense. The existence of the sidings already involved the use of something like 8,000 waggons as against half that number in Victoria, whilst the mileage in the latter Colony exceeded that of New Zealand.
