Railway Revenue
«. The returns of railway revenue for the twelve weeks which ended en the 30th ultimo are of a most disquieting character. The gross receipts for 1487 miles of railway amounted only to £259,685, as against £273,086 for 1408 miles in the corresponding period of last year— a decrease of over £13,000 —although the length of lines open has increased by 79 miles. This is indeed a poor look out for the current year's revenue. But there is worse to come, for while the receipts have so alarmingly diminished the working expenses hare largely increased—viz, from £154,780 to £161,147. their ratio to receipts being 62 per cent as against 56 per cent last year, a most serious advance in the relative costliness of working, manifestly due to the irrationa) reduction of rates, which results in so much mere work having to be done to earn so much less mosey. The net profits for the twelve weeks have diminished from £118,297 in 1884 to £98,538 this year, a decrease of nearly £20,000, involving a falhng-off at the rate of some £86,000 a year. The falling-offon the HurunuUßluff line is considerably greater than this, being at the rate of just about £100,000 per annum but this is to some small extent lessened by the increase on the other sections, such as the Wellington and Auckland lines, leaving the net loss as above stated. These figures demand the careful attention of everyone interested in the welfare of the Colony.
