CORRESPONDENCE.
THE SALVATION AEMY AND THE RECENT COURT CASES AGAINST BELFIT AND ANDEESON. [We are not responsible for the opinions of our correspondents.] TO THB EDITOB Of THK STAB. Sir, — I am informed that the local Captain of the Army last night organised (in a very praiseworthy manner) a collection to defray the fines imposed on the defendants in the recent cases, and the result was something over £2. The fines amount in all to £7 15s, leaving aside the question of payment of the defendants' solicitor, so there is still a heavy deficiency. . '■ ■ Nowwithoutdisputmgtherighteousness of the decisions, it will be generally admitted that there were many mitigating circumstances as (indeed is evidenced by the subscription above mentioned), and as public opinion is somewhat exercised on the question, and the defendants earn their bread by the sweat of their brow, which can hardly be said of the prosecutor, I would suggest that some disinterested person make a canvass to defray the fines, or that you would receive small donations for the purpose. Of course if defendants' solicitor's costs were included, " Barkus is willing." — I am, &c., * Wm. S. Stattb, Solicitor for defendants. Feilding, July 27th, 1885.
