♦ In his reply on the Local Powers and Finance Bui Sir Julius Vogel gave the following interesting statistics regarding New Zealand's financial position : — -He had taken a balance-sheet showing the actual position of the colony, which waß said to be overburdened with debt. The assets on the 31st of March, 1883, were: Seal property, exclusiveof Maori lauds, £101,000,000; personatproperty, £64,000,000; public works, including railways, telegraphs, harbours, &c. (an tender estimate), £16,000,000. That made the total amount of assets £181,000,000. The debt of the colony in 1883 was £27,785,000; local bodies, £4,197,000; mortgages amounting to £15,000,000 ; and debts outside the colony amounting to£7,ooo,ooomakinginall£s4,ooo,ooo and leaving a surplus balance to the wealth of the colony of £127,000,000, The average wealth was £227 per head;, making 'this colony almost the wealthiest country in the world. ain's wealth per inhabitant w»*^24» ; France, £218; Germany, £140; Russia, £52 ; Austria, £9^ The Australian colonies are put dpwnl at J6J97*_ jtfewi South Wales heads the amount with £241, 'and New Zealand" is down at," £205, but the statement he had made, was absolutely correct. : l - ""* *'
