PALMERSTON Y. FEILDING.

The match between these clubs was played on the Palmeroton ground last Saturday, and resulted in Folding being defeated by 13 points to 2. The day was beautifully finaand the ground in splendid order, so the play was \%" rery fast and the passing, at times, ■ very fair. One feature of the gam* was the number of tries at goal which were unsuccessful. This is not as it should be, and on some future occasion might be the means of losing a match which otherwise would have been won. The ball was kicked off by Palmerston a few minutes after three, and was immediately returned to the centre of the ground, where the first scrimmage took place. The forwards, however, seemed very evenly matched, so that no decided advantage was gained by either side. The. Palmerston backs, on the oontrary, were much heavier and stronger than those on the Feilding side, and this no doubt had a good deal to do with the result of the game.

The first score was made by Jackson, for Palmerston, who after a good run obtained a try close to the touch line, but the kick at goal was unsuccessful — 2-0. On the ball being brought out the Feilding forwards took it well into the Palmerston quarters, where some liard play occurred. C. Halcornbe obtaining the ball from a scrimmage effected a pretty pass to Thomson, who carried it over the line and secured the first try for Feilding. No goal resulted, however, so the scores were even — 2-2. The ball remained in the Palmerston quarters for some few minutes, but it was gradually worked down, tke field, and during the last five minutes of the first spell, remained even on the Feilding twenty-fire. After a sh^-i interval goals were changed, and the ball set rolling again. From the kick off it Was well taken by the Feilding forwards, and kept well in the Pahner[^*ton quarters, but this was soon changed, and the Feilding men called on to defend their goal line. Very ibbn Templar secured the ball, and by a determined run scored the second try for his side, but "no gcai" was the decision of the umpire — 4-2. The next score was made by Baker, but again no goal resulted — 6-2. The Feilding forwards then pulled themselves together, and by a good rush carried the ball well past the centre of the ground, but Paimerston defended their goal line well, and no score was made. Soon the ball was worked back to the Feilding end, the Palmerston forwards making some splendid dribbling rushes," and gaining a lot of ground every time. Templar again secured the ball and carried it over the line along with two or three of the Feilding backs, but for the fourth time the kick at goal was a failure — 8-2. The last try was obtained by Moffat, from which he managed to kick a goal, and immediately afterwards time was called, the game thus ending in favor of Palmerston by 13 points to 2. The umpires, Messrs Pratt and _Gurney, had plenty to do, and gave every satisfaction. The match, with. Wanganui will be played there on the Ist of August. Next Saturday there will be a practise at Palmerston, when the team chosen to represent the county will play all comers, who, it is hoped, will roll up well and give the team a good game.
