Halcombe and Sherwiil's next stock sale will take place on 9th July. The first instalment (£lo,ooo} of the Palmerston loan will be paid to tnat Borough on or about July Ist. An interesting civil action, and a criminal cross action, between two of our local tradesmen, will be be heard in the R.M. Court to-morrow. To-day tenders aro invited for the erection of sale rooms and offices for Messrs Halcombe and Sherwi". The new buildings will be situated next t© Mr Hastie's Feilding Hotel, Kimbolton Road. Members of the Manchester Rifle Corps are reminded that Government parade will he held next Thursday. Fines for nonattendance will ,be enforced, as .on this parade depends the amount of capitation 1 money the corps' will receive from the Government.
Thompson's Diorama of the Soudan War will show in the Public Hall to-night. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here at about 7.10 last evening. The body of Liardet has been found on the eastern side of Lake Wairarapa. The Auckland and Waikato laud rings are very bitter against Stout and Ballance. A "call" of the Legistative Council makes it imperative for every member to attend, under penalty of a veiy heavy fine. Messrs Stevens and Gorton's stock sale to-day was largely attended, and on the whole passed oil very satisfatorily. Capt. Macarthur, M.H.E,., will be here for the inspection parade of the Manchester Rifles. Mr L. P. Blanchard, surveyor, Christchurch, died last week. He was _ one of the Canterbury pilgrims who arrived in this colony on board the Randolph. The negetitions between the Government and the directors of the WellingtonManawatu Railway for the purchase of the railway, have been broken off. We (Standard) understand that the total amounts now guaranteed in reference to Mr Walton's canvass, in connection with reduced insurance tariff represent £63,500. Mr H. Halcombe resumod his duties at the Bank of Australasia yesterday. He has almost entirely recovered from his injury, but the arm is still somewhat stiff. A meeting of the shareholders of the Makino Butter and Cheese Company will be held at the Makino Eoad school room, to-morrow at 7 p.m., to receive directors report &c. The election for a seat in the Borough ! Council, took place yesterday. The following aro the results : — Eade,. 36 ; Foster, 24 ; Hammond, 21. Mr Eade was therefore declared duly elected. A want which has been long felt in the Kiwitea district is about to be supplied by Mr Jensen, blacksmith of Feilding, who will shortly open a branch shop for shoeing and general smith's work at Cheltenham. We are glad to notice that considerable interest is being taken in the approaching visit of the Rita-Radcliffe Company. It has been definitely arranged that they will appear in the Public Hall on Wednesday, the Ist July. They will play in Palmerston on the following night, Mr B. Tyreman has just imported two young Yorkshire white sows (large breed) from Mr James Eowe, of Christchurch, and has also received a boar from the same firm a shprt time ago. It is Mr Tyreman's intention to breed a first-class stock from the above. — Chronicle. An old settler named Captain Edwin Stafford, well-known in connection with the shipping trade between this colony and Newcastle, was found dead in his bed at the Lower Hutt, Wellington, on Friday last. Deceased was a prominent Freemason, of many years standing. Death occurred from natural causes. This will be a great day for Wanganui — (says the Napier Telegraph of the 18th instant) the anniversary of the battle of Waterloo. The papers are certain to have discovered in the locality if not one or two who were in that celebrated engagement, at least a relative of a deceased hero, or somebody who had known the mother-in-law of one. Some ornamental trees were purchased at the sale held by Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill on Saturday, for the church ground at Turakina. Mr Taylor (Chairman of the Kiwitea Road Board), being the owner of some cattle which had broken in and damaged some of the trees, took this opportunity of providing others to replace them. In the sale of fruit trees &c, from the nursery of Mr J. Laird of Wanganui, held in Messrs Halcombe and Sherwiil's auction rooms on Saturday last, was well attended, and the prices realized were eminently satisfactory. The demand for the fruit trees afforded ample proof of the high estimation in which Mr J. Laird's productions are held in Feilding. Yesterday a man named Miller, working in the bush at Halcombe, inflicted a severe wound on his left hand with an axe, while making a wooden wedge. An artery was opened, resulting in the loss of a great quantity of blood, and as there is no medical man at Halcombe Miller rode down to Feilding to Dr Johnston, but he being absent he went to Mr Higgin, the chemist, who did the necessary dressing. A very extraordinary accident happened to the south train on Saturday morning last at the Wangaehu Hill. The rails were slippery, and the driver, guard and fireman all got off to put sand on the rails. The brakes not having been properly put on, the train got away on down the hill, and was only stopped by the passengers. A most serious catastrophe was thus averted. We understand that an enquiry will be held. In the meantime the engine driver, Bowes, and guard, Fletcher, have been suspended. A new advertisement from Mr Shailer, the well-known photographer, of Palmerston, appears elsewhere. He 'intimates his intention to oontinue to visit Feilding every Wednesday, on which days he will meet his patrons at his studio at Mr G. W. Fowles', Manchester street. Mr Shailer offers a liberal concession. to persons ordering twelves or more cartes des visite by making them a present in the shape of a cabinet copy Of the .same' {>hotos. Orders for groups, views, &£., eft with Mr Fowles will be promptly attended to. Mr Vincent Pyke, M.H.R., is about to send Home, for presentation respectively to Her Majesty the Queen, H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, and H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, three yery pretty little caskets of New Zealand "woods, exquisitely finished and polished and lined with coloured satin, each containing a copy — , printed on white satin — of Mr Pyke's well-known New Zealand anthem, •• The Old Flag." The woods are rimu, honeysuckle and ribbonwood, and are particularly beautiful specimens. Mr Pyke understands advertising. i The annual sheep returns for the year ending 31st May, 1884, have been laid 1 before Parliament. The total number of i sheep in the colony on that date was ! 13,978,520, as against 13,306,329, or an : increase of 672,191 on return of previous year. In the several districts the increase or decrease during the year have been as follows :— Auckland, ' increase, 10,263; Napier, increase, 157,804; Taranaki; de- | crease, 3292 ; Wanganui, increase, 8233 ; Rangitikei, increase, 53,769 ; Wellington, increase. 67,983 ; Nelson, increase, 4432 ; Malborough, increase, 39,691 ; Canterbury, increase, 217,829; Westland, increase, 217; Otago, increase, 115,262, notwithstanding a dscrenso of 44,472 sustained in the Lake and Southland counties. Cross-bred shoep show an enormous increase, being five -sixths of the total increase of the colony for the year.
