Insurance Rates
. TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB.. . Sir, — In a report in one of the Palinerston papers of the insurance meet jug held there on Monday evening, r Thompson is reported to have said — 'One insurance agent in Feilding, Rearing of the movement on foot, had written to his principals to obtain power to reduce tho premiums, but they advised him to take no notice of the meeting, and pooh-hoohed the idea of the combination being successful." Now, if Mr Thompson is correctly reported he was somewhat in error ii^ making the above statement, pi'esum- " ing that he refers to myself. What I. did say, though not for publication, was that I had asked for counsel as to telring any action in reference [ 7 to. the. movement, not for, power to reducepremiums; 1 ajid that the "advice". I received was to ' ta&e ho action. .1 : did not say iny principals jbooh-hoohod ,the movement.' Indeed, 86 far from* doing this, they said-^-" The rates 'are too high, arid we only wish they were lower." It is' a great mistake toVsuppose that the companies are individually anxious to keep uj> the present tariff, but being combined, one cannot reduce it without the others do the same;4~Tam, &c., : — ■-■:»' r .',[.!:.:" -,r>- ■•'■'' '< >i ■:■■■■ >.■■'■' :-AoENT.- :
