The Feilding Library

In our report of the proceedings of the Borough Council on Thursday night it will be Been seme remarks were made on the subject of the Library. Councillor Nicholas said he thought it was time some new books were obtained. This sentiment will meet a cordial response in the mind of all those ratepayers who are desirous of themselves and families reaping the liberal benefits which are bestowed by a good library, stored with a large and varied selection of useful and entertaining books. Although there has been a liberal display of public generosity in the matter of this library, first by the cheerfulness with which the library rate has been paid, and secondly by a very creditablo list of subscribers, yet it is too much to expect that individuals will continue to subscribe as members in the vague hope that at some future time their mental pabulum will be renewed by the addition to the library shelves of some of the current literature of the day. In order to get readers the library must have books. The proposal made by Cr Fowi.es that old periodicals and

I books be sold should at one© be car- ] ried into effect, and the proceeds of such sale devoted to this purpose. We believe that a resolution to this effect stands on the minute book of the Council already, but this appears to have been forgotten. It is well known that the arrangements made by the Library Committee with Mr Carthew enables them to import books at a lower coat than in any other part of the colony, and this privilege ought to be taken advantage of to the fullest extent. We would suggest that the committee anticipate their revenue a little and obtain a supply of j news books. We are satisfied that for every pound sterling spent in this direction they would get two new names added to the lists of subscribers. The experiment is worth trying anyway- __-___.
