Although we hare from time tb ( time disapproved of the policy of the Gladstone Ministry -.in regard to their conduct of affairs in Egypt and Afghanistan, yet the news which reached^ by wire yesterday that the Government i-* 1 been! defeated on their financial pr6?°saWhas caused us sincere regret. If a 1 ! 8 Wews j had boon received when we'werevwftonstaut expectation and fear of a warvrit]*
Russia, it -v^ould probably have been more welcome, but coining at a time when the minds of men have been calmed down, and soothed by the prospects of a peace brought about by the wise conciliatory policy of Mr Gladstone, it is intelligence which all true Liberals must receive with unbounded dread. Some few days ago it was announced that he would soon retire from public life, and this defeat may hasten the determination to seek that repose which a long lifo spent in the service of his country demands.
