Arrival of the 'Frisco Mail
♦ (PER UNITED PBE33 ASBOCIATIOS.) Auckland, June 1. The Australia from San Francisco, arrived at 430 p.m. to-day. She left San Franciieo on the 10th May. The passage was fine and uneventful. Mr Gladstone gave notice io the House of Commons on the Bth of May of a motion to provide a dowry for the Princess Beatrice, on h*»r approaching marriage to Prince Henry of Battenburg. It was received with jeers from the Home Rule and Radical benches. A formal opposition will be made by Mr Henry Labouchere. Lady Lonsdalo, on whose account Edmund Yates suffered imprisonment for libel, was married to Earl D« Grey at St. Martin's Charing Cross. The Fortnightly Review publishes articles by Charles William!*, the Soudan correspondent, substantially proving the incompetence of Sir Charles Watson, and the virtual daughter of General Gordon by his negligence. When the matter is brought up in Parliament Lord Charles Beresford and many blue Jackets arc willing t« be witnesses. The discassion on the Budget in the lobby of the House of Commons discloses much discontent aineng the Irish and Scotch members, whose grievance in tbe disproportion between the wbinky and beer duties, the whisky tax being increased half a penny per glass and the beer tax bj only three fath ngs per gallon. Small-pox prevails in Montreal. The Government announce that the Irish Crimea Act will be the first business in Parliament after the Redistribution of St'&ts .Bill is disposed of.
We have to acknotdedge receipt of The Industrial Gazette for May. Its size has been considerably increased, and much interesting rending matter added. Captain Edwin telegraphs to-day — Warnings for northerly gales and rain after 16 hoiri.
