The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MAY 30, 1885. Stamps on Colonial Securities

It will be seen by our London cables to-day, the Agents-General of the colonies are urging upon the Government of England the exemption of Colonial Securities from Stamp Duties. Whether the request will be granted or not it is impossible for us to judge, but we are inclined to think it very unlikely at the present time, when the English taxpayer is burdened with the cost of the immense preparations being made in anticipation of a war with Russia, that the Chancellor of the Exchequer will give up a source of revenue which promises to increase year by year, and will be a means of partially easing English taxation. On the other hand the popularity of the colonies at present with the British nation, may incline the Government of that country to be generous and make the concession gracefully.
