Jobbery in High Places

There is a growing feeling of public dissatisfaction with the manner in which the departments under the control of the Colonial Secretary are being administered, and it would be well for the Premier to give some personal attention to the subject, before the whole Government are inrolred in discredit through the blunders or worse, of a single Minister. Almost every day some fresh scandal crops up in connection with one or another of the public institutions which are under the Colonial Secretary's Office, while the favouritism and arbitrariness displayed by Mr Buckley with regard to appointments and dismissals, are becoming quite notorious. If a full and particular account were to be given of all the changes made in his departments since he took office, it would rather astonish the public, we venture to say, and Mr Buckley's own colleagnes, probably, would not be best pleased by it. The present Colonial Secretary, in fact, has introduced an element into the departmental administration of New Zealand from which it had previously been happily free, and which is more akin to the state of municipal affairs in New York or San Francisco than' to the methods hitherto prevailing in the Government of this colony.—Wellington Press.
