Death of a Maori Chief
"Governor" Hunia who just died at Rangitikei was quite a celebrity in Maori andpakeha circles. Ho was presented, through the late Dr Featherston, by Her Majesty the Queen with a splendid and costly Highlander's kilt, valued at 100 guineas, in which he was wont to display* a fine pair of calves for the admiration of bis tribe. ' (from our own correspondent.) Btrcxs, This Day. Kawana Hunia, chief of the Ngatipapa, died on Saturday. The natives are assembling from all parts of the North Island. About eight hundred are already gathered at Parawanui. The obsequies take place next Monday, when it is estimated full twelve hundred natives will be present. Major Kemp and many other chiefs of note will be present.
