Parihaka
On the subject of the scare attempted to be raised anent Te Whiti and his followers at Parihaka, the Wanganui Herald remarks as follows: — "Now, owing to the mischief the unfounded telegrams have done by disturbing the feeling of security which had deservedly arisen since the present Native Minister took charge of affairs, Mr Ballance is compelled to order a small detachment (25) of the Constabulary to return and occupy the Pungarehu reboubt. This is done not because there is danger from Te Whiti and his followers, but to counteract the efforts of half-a-dozen self-seeking Europeans, who are utterly reckless of assertion, and are doing their worst to destroy the peace it has cost so much to ratify and maintain. These people have been a thorn in the flesh to every Native Minister, and have been threatened before now with forcible deportation." Taranaki telegrams do not appear to be too reliable.
