Hop Poles
Here are a few hints to growers, extracted from an exchange :—" A number of Kent farmers haye adopted Coley's vinery system, which is rather expensive but works exceedingly well. In th'c system one main pole is fixed in each hop centre, and cut at the top to resemble a fork, which i* inclined until it reaches the nexr pole within some 3ft. from the soil. This cross-stick is securely lashed to the mprights. Another (system is receiving some attention Large posts, stouter even than ordinary telegraph posts, are fixed one at each end of a row. From these wires are arranged both horizontally and vertically, and the hops trained to them. Ia Germany wire is extensively used in hop grounds, and in France a most elaborate system of wire net- work running overhead, as well as iu a row with the plants, has recently been patented. The Kent farmers do not favor the use of wire, ns they find the bine has a tendency to break away, and the trouble ef tying is much greater than when poles are used. -
