Feiding Borough Council
An ordinary meeliug of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening last. Present — the Mayer, and all the Councillors. The minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read and respectively confirmed. The following correspondence wai read: —Public Works Committee's report, recommending a groin in the Makino stream ia Derby street, a small bridge over the drain in Marlborough street, and a diversion ef the drain near the Denbigh hotel ; Mr Beaufort, the librarian, offering to de the duties for 10s per week the year round ; Sir Julius Vogel, telegram re a proposal to increase the rating limit within Boroughs from \ to Id in the £ on the capital value, in order to give Boroughs the same incense from rates as under the system of levying Is ia the £ on the annual value, and requesting the Councils opinion on the matter ; Churchwardens of St. Johns Church asking for a license for entertainments for school and church purposes for the new school-room free of charge; Mr Hammood, another letter re compensation in the matter of the work of Manchester street bridge; Mr Hili, Borough Engineer, declining the offer of 2\ per cent on the engineering work of the Borough ; Same, as Town Clerk accepting the terms of his former engagement as agreed upon by the Council at last meeting ; Mr Lewers, .asking fer compensation, for metalling in front ef his business premises ; Mr Lyne, tendering a site in Denbigh street for a public pound ; Mr Haybittle, tendering a site in Bowen street, or Grey street for the same. .
Mr Clarke was present, and gave a rerbal tender for a aite for. a pound in Denbigh street, but this being informal, could sot be entertained. A motion, That Mr Lowers be allowed, the sum of £'1 10s as compensation for gravelling in front of bis premises was the subject of a short discussion, and on a division being called for, was negatived by a majority of two. It was resolved, That the selection of a site for a pound be left with the Public Works Committee, to report at the next meeting of the Council and that they also report upen the advisableness of accepting either of the tenders ef Mr Hay bit tie or Mr Lyne. The report of the Public Works Committee was adopted. Cr Thompson moved, and Cr Goodbehere seconded, That the application ef the St. John's Church wardens for a free license for the school room be granted, on condition that the room be only used for purposes connected with the church or Sunday schoel. — Carried. A short discussion took place on the matter of the rating referred to in Sir Julias Yegel's telegram. The Mayor pointed out the desirable* ness of the Borough having the power to increase the rating limit, aid in this the Council agreed. On the motion of Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Thompson, the following resolution was then carried, That the Mayor be requested, in reply to the telegram from Sir Jalius Vogel, to iaferm him that this Council are disposed to approve of the proposals referred to in his communication. , The Council then weat into committee for the purpose of considering the letteis from Mr Hill, Mr Beaufort and Mr Hammond.
