Yesterday's Polling

The election yesterday for a seat at the Borough Council resulted in a majority for Mr J. Bartholomew who polled 76 votes against Mr James Hastie's 11. Very little interest was manifested in the proceedings as Mr Hastie had practically withdrawn from the contest, and had intimated to his friends that if they consulted his wishes they would support Mr John Bartholomew who he considered would have more leisure to attend to the duties of the position. This will account in some measure for the small number of votes polled for Mr Hastie. We congratulate Mr Bartholomew on his election, and the burgesses on having secured the services of so estimable a citizen. The result of the voting on the local option has not yet been officially announced by the chairman of the Licensing Committee but we understand that it is in favor of extending the number of licenses by six votes.
