There is not much information | (says a contemporary) available res- ' pecting the Russian fleet in the ! Pacific. In 1878 the Russian Government bought three swift steamers from an American firm, converted them into cruisers, and renamed them the Europe, the Asia, and the Africa. It will be remembered that one. of these vessels was in Auckland Harbor I about three years ago, and we are ! informed that a party of officers came | on shore and had a good look at the guns, one of which is now to be mounted. There is also another ship of the same class called the Zabiaca. They are all of light draught and high speed. Two vessels, named the Raslojnik and the Najesduik, have also been in commission in the Pacific The former is built with iron, sheathed with wood about 16in thick; the latter is a composite vessel. There are a number of the vessels, but we have not present any particulars respecting, them. On the Russian Pacific Coast there are fortifications. 1 at Nicolaieff, at the month of the I Amour, Petropaulovski, and Vadivo- ' stock. .
