Certainly, we would bedelighted; but we have a - thousand^ reasons for not following his example,' and .mo, know a good! many more well meaning people who are in the same fax. The Minister of Defence will confer with the Governor as to the selection. A lawyer walked down Fergusson street the other day with his arm taxed to hold a lot of law books. "Why, 1 thought you carried all that stuff in your head !'-' observed a townsman. "I do," quietly replied the youug lawyer with a knowing wink, " these are for the R.M." Mr Ashbury, ex-M.P. for Brighton, who made such an ass of himself by catering to the absurd pretensions of the King natives, has shown his sense of the value of land in New Zealand by purchasing an estate in Invercargill for £150,000. It is observable that he bas settled as far away from the natives ahd their troubles as possible. The Government are setting aside, a block of land of about ,5000 acres at the south-west base of Mount Egmont as a semi-military settlement. He has determined that in future everything which can be manufactured will be manufactured^ in i the Colony. The positive dishonesty of English contractors is ruining their trade, and articles made at Home " for export only," are rapidly becoming unsaleable in the colonies from their inferior quality. We notice that the large and increasing goods traffic at the Feilding railway station is rendering the present goods-shed altogether inadequate. The officials are sometimes at their wits end to find accommodation for both exports aud imports. The size of the shed is only 40 xBO feet, whde another/station on the Ujio whore there is not half tho goods traffic there is here is 100 v 42.
