The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1885. Borough Finances
At a special meeting of the Borough Council held on Thursday evening, at which, the whole of the councillors were present, with the exception of : Councillor Loudon, who has resigned, the following resolution was unanimously passed : — " That the necessary steps be taken for raising a loan of £216 for the purpose of constructing the requisite works at the Kiwitea stream, said loan to be secured by a special rate of 6d in the £ for one j year." It was also decided to tele- ; graph yesterday morning to Mr Mac▲bthvb, if.HJt. for Manawatu, who is now in Wellington, asking him to wait upon the Minister of Public Works, and lay before him the condition of the Borough from the heavy losses sustained by the floods last year, and endeavour to obtain some assistance from the Government to relieve the ratepayers, in part at least, of the heavy pressure now bearing upon them from circumstances beyond their control. That Mr Macarthue will do his best the ratepayers may rest assured, and if he is unsuccessful it will not be from want of diligence on his part. In order to strengthen his hands the burgesses must do their part by undertaking to provide the small sum they are asked to contribute towards the necessary work. Nothing encourages assistance from others so much as a strong evidence of an intention to help ourselves; and if the Government is made to understand that we are perfectly self-reliant, the request made by the member for the district will be readily acceded to. There are doubtless several who will, for a time before the polling day, be opposed to the new rate, but we hope that calm reflection will enable them to see that opposition can only be actuated by captious motives, or a desire to appear singular. We are glad to notice that the councillors are unanimous for carrying the rate it through. This in itself will go far to secure a favorable majority. As the affairs of the Borough now stand, unanimity on the part of the councillors and the burgesses generally is absolutely necessary to place the Borough finances on a sound footing. It must be kept steadily in view by every business man, that the Kimbolton road is the only way for the settlers in the country opened by it to come down with produce and take back their supplies.
