Manchester Horticultural Society's Autumn Show
This society held its annual autumn exhibition in the Public Hall yesterday, and the whole collection was equal to the average of tho society's previous shows. The pot plants were numerous, and on the whole were in better condition and fuller of bloom, than has been usual at shows here of late, and certainly presented a very pretty show in themselves. Special mention must, however, be made of - : the grand collection of 300 plants sent by Mr F. Hunt, not for competition. These occupied a large table about 40 x 4 feet at the head of the building and being in great variety and a^l in full bloom, presented a charming sight. Indeed these and the other pot plants together presented one of j the prettiest shows of the kind ever seen in Feilding. Gut flowers did not present such a large display as on^ some former occasions, but they were in good trim, and contained some, very pretty specimens. There was a large collection of fruits, more particularly of apples, some of the samples being probably finer than have ever found their way into the Feilding Public Hall. There was, as might have been expected,, a marked absence of peaches, excepting a few in a general collection of fruit, but nectarines, pears, quinces, grapes, strawberries, blackberries, and some others were very creditable to the district, which, judging from the magnificent samples seen yesterday, is . better adapted for the growth of these fruits than of some others. Of vegetables there was a very good show indeed, and some of the exhibits were remarkably fine, especially among potatoes, cabbages, and soire others. The exhibits in produce were on the whole a great credit, though the collection was not quite so large as on some former occasions. Hams and bacon were conspicuous by their absence, as were also hops, the reasonin the hitter case being no doubt the fact that our hop growers are too busy with the gathering in of their crops to attend to the matter. Among the numerous articles sent for exhibition only, may be mentioned an elegant piece of furniture in the shape of a cheffonier made of various locally grown woods by Mr Ah Hing, better known as "Charley the Chinaman;" a beautiful piece of artistic workmanship by Mr K. W. Smith, in the shape of a lady's work box, inlaid with no less than 3,000 pieces of wood, and which took a prize at the Paris Exht-;' bition; an embroidered table cover and some wool flowers, the work of Miss Wilson, of Makino; an orange grown by Mr W. Stevens, being the. first one produced on this Block ; isix"' 1 immense apples grown by Mrs Bowler ; samples of horehound champagne manufactured by Mr Gray, of Bulls; twelve large apples grown by Mr An- : dersen, of Sandon ; and some tomatoes by Mr Corkery. Mr F. Hunt, nurser) - man, and Mr W. C. Kitney, gardener to Sir Wm. Fox, officiated as judges, and Mr Lethbridge acted as referee. The judging was gone through in a most deliberate manner, with the following results : — CLASS A. — POT PLANTS. Geraniums, 3 varieties, single, Mr Prior's special, W. Fowles. The attendance in the evening was very great, and so dense was the crowd that moving about was almost impossible without inconvenience. Mr Daw's band played during the time at intervals and although a little more softness in the rendering or modulation in the tones of some of the instruments would have been an advantage, their efforts were very pleasing. Mr Wright kindly acted as auctioneer, on the Dutch system, for Mr Hunt. He was very clever and amusing in his style of disposing the flowers. In fact it was one of " best parts of the show." The proceeds at the door wero £15. ho ended one of iim best .sho.vij that lAulding has yet li.i'l, and the committee have earned the thanks of the puMic by tliuir zeal aud enerjry.
