THE EXCITEMENT IN SYDNEY
[per united pbess association.]
Sydnet, February 20.
The approaching departure of troops for the Soudan is the all-absorbing topic. All is bustle and excitement. Everywhere men aro offering themselves freely, both married and single, and members are being enrolled and sent in to the barracks. The steamers Tberia and Australasia have been chartered, and will soon commence to load. A council of war, consisting of Messrs Dalley, Dibbs and Wright, sits daily, and a groat deal of business is done. Respectable and 1 - hardworking citizens, who have been following a number of trades, have been suddenly transformed into full-blown field officers, with all military status, and with handsome pay and allowances. They will not take thpir guns, as they are too heavy, but will receiFe a battery of 9-pounders at Suakim. War correspondents from each paper will accompany the expedition. In the midst of all these preparations thefe are not wanting those .who raise their voices in derreeiation of the course pursued, and the loudest among them is Sir Henry Parkes. :
