The Crops
The North Otago Times states that nearly the whole of the crops in the Pukeuri, Papakaio, Awamoko, Duntroon, andMarawhenua districts have been cut and stacking is being pushed ahead. The yield of both wheat and oats will be, without doubt, very much above the average, and in some instances the crops of these cereals are remarkably heavy. The crops are all gathered in Nelson, and the yield has been an abundant one. It is estimated that there are 1000 acres under hops this season. In the Marlborough province the crops are all in the stack, and threshing is proceeding in all directions. The yield per acre is the heaviest ever known there. Some of the early sown oat crops in the Oamaru district have suffered extensive injury from small birds. We have heard of a crop that promised a capital yield which has, since it ripened, lost half its bulk of grain. Mr David Knight, of Oeo and Mr Bartlett, of Otakeho, who have grown crops of the sparrowbiil oats, are believed to have the heaviest yields in the Waimate Plains district. The farmers of Taranaki are busy harvesting, and wheat and oats will yield large returns this season. The cocksfoot harvest is being got in by the bush farmers in excellent condition.
