Lpbe united pbess association. Auckland, This Day. A. lad named Drifflo was drowned at Pararu yesterday through the capsizing of a boat. A deputation waited on Sir Julius Yogel in reference to the South Sea Islands trade, making inquiries as to whether, if a large company was formed to trade to the islands, the Government would give it assistance. The Colonial Treasurer expressed an opinion that if a company were formed, and it was well supported by the Auckland members, the House would not be disinclined to give it a reasonable amount of aid. Wellington This. Day. The New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Tongariro, which arrived at Plymouth on Tuesday, made the passage from Lyttelton in 38 days, being four days under contract time. The secretary of the Post-office notifies that the Australia, with, the January English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 16th inst., two days later than time-table date. The Zealandia with the February colonial mails arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 22nd inst., two days earlier than time-table date. Blbnhbih, This Daj. The licensing committee elections are concluded, and were the keenest contests ever known here. The temperance men had a majority in one ward, returned two in the second, aud were entirely beaten in the third. It is understood that 11 o'clock closing wiil be continued. Che Wilmott Company met with a mishap • in the final seen* of " Uncle Tom's Cabin" lately. A stand containing angels wafting Tom to Heaven came down with a crash just as the curtain was falling, and Miss Lena Wyatt and a little girl sustained slight cuts on the head. Uncle Tom and the other angels escaped with a severe shaking and fright. Miss Wyatt was not prevented from performing next day. There was great consternation in the crowded audience. Dunedin, This Day. At the Police Court on Wednesday last Thomas McKenzie was charged with having, on the sth instant, at Oirake Creek, of malice aforethought, attempted to drown Richard Norman, master of the Janet t.amsay, with intent to murder him. After the hearing of lengthy evidence, the case was adjourned fora week. Hokitika, February 26. The Koran ui Company have opened out a seam of coal twenty feet in width. -Chbistchubch, February 26. The Spanish Consul is appealing to the public for. subscriptions in aid of the sufferers by the earthquakes - firing December in the south part of Spain. The .Times this morning announces that Mr Blackburn, the celebrated English chess player, now in Australia will probably visit New Zealand. This Day. An old man named James Bad ford was sent to gaol for 14 days by Mr Beetham, R.M., yesterday, for cruelty to a girl of nine years whom he had adopted. The child had been tied up with a rope by the hands and feet to a bedpost on several occasion ; one day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. and again left alone in the house tied to the bedpost.
