Fitzherbert Land Sale
"We learn from a contemporary that the Wellington and Manawatu Company have agreed to allow the whole ©f the unsold sections in the FitzHeribert Block and township of Linton to be open for a limited period for private selection at the upset prices. Plans and schedules may be obtained at the offices of the company in Wellington and Palmerston Nortn. The land may also be selected at both offices. Although the sale of these sections at the auction recently held in Wellington "was not a success, so far as the quitting of the land is concerned, yet on the other hand it may be said that as far as selling for actual settlement is concerned it indicated that the " undesirable landshark," was fended off by the terms of purchase. Those who did buy were men who intend to occupy their sections and are acquainted with the land and its value. If the suggestions made by our Palmerston contemporaries and ourselves to the effect that the auction be held in Palmerston had been adopted and carried out, the result would probably have been very different. The company has since done the next best thing, and have, as above stated, left the land open for private selection. We venture to say that at the end of the present year it will be found that settlement will be fairly started by men who have an intention to make homes. The fewer absentee owners they are the better for the future of the new settlements. As the Welling-ton-Manawatu line approaches connection with the Wanganui-Manawatu line, so will the number increase of persons seeking land with the vie|p of commencing farming operations on either side to avail themselves of the ready means which will thus be afforded of the Wellington market for disposal of their produce.
