Four Good Reasons
-" ' • ♦ — ■ — M. J. S. Mackenzie, in his speech at Naseby, spoke about the crofters' clause in the Land Act as follows :— A special settlement is made at Catlin's Biver, and 10 acres are to be granted to any Highland crofter who comes out.^ Some of you may know that I supported that clause, and may be surprised at it; seeing that it proposes to giva-to strangers what it denies to our own "citizens. * I had four specific reasons, which I shall state to you seriatim- — First, 1 am a Highlander myselfrand have a fellow feeling for jny fthfoi?tunate countrymen; secondly, >Ir >Jacaiidrew who too]; up the question*isV Very kindly soul himself, and I was, loth to .fomp his ardour; thirdly dfall the crofters who come to this country not one .will settle at Catlin'a Biveryoiuler the act; and iourthly, no crofters will come to the colony at all. If they do so, it will beiirtheway of ordinary immigration."
