The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1885 The Licensing Committee
On Monday next candidates for the position of members of the Licensing Committee for the Borough of Feilding nxnst be nominated, and nomination papers banded in to the Returning Officer, Mr Hill, before noon. We are not aware of any movement being made, either on the side of the licensed victuallers or of the temperance party, to bring forward candidates to represent either interest. It is not necessary perhaps that any false excitement should be created where there is neither occasion nor a desire on the part of the public generally to be moved from " the even tenor of their way." The members of tbe Licensing Committee who are now on the point of retiring have done their work conscientiously and to the satisfaction of the electors, and should any of them offer themselves for re-election, we are certain they will be again returned. In comparison with other places, we have reason to believe that the hotels in the Borough are remarkably well conducted. Tho only fault they have is held in common with every hotel in the Colony, without exception; that is, Sunday trading. It is not too much to say that that contravention of the Licensing Act will obtain " for all time," or until there is absolute free trade in liquor. There is one pledge which candidates ought to give, which is that no extension of time will be granted, if applied for. The ten o'clock licenses do excellently for the country towns and are not required as in the largest towns of the Colony.
