• Pursuant to notice the Makino Band played an excellent selection of pieces on the Square on Saturday evening. A dealer from Woodville has purchased the whole of the fruit in Mr Towler's orchard. A few days ago at the "Waimate, a man got three months imprisonment with hard labor, for using obscene language. The bush fires near Bunnythorpe have done serious damage to some of the valuable timber. One proprietor estimates his loss at £2,000. The Eev. Mr Parsonson, who was for some time a resident here, was a passenger by train on Saturday, en route from Invorcargill to Auckland. Mr Washbourne has purchased the Parapara Hematite works at Collingwood, Golden Bay. Ho left Feilding by this morning's train. Before Lord Randolph Churchill left for India he shook hands with Mr Chamberlain. Lord Randolph appears to have his doubts about the climate of the East. The Hon. John Bryce was in Feilding yesterday. In the afternoon he drove up to the Kiwitea to pay a short visit to his friends there. * Dr Delauney, the French physiologist, declares that a person sleeping on his right side has incoherent and absurd dreams, but if sleeping on his left side his dreams are intelligent. The richest heiress in the world is too young to marry yet, so the aspiring will have to wait. She is a little girl, seven years of age, daughter of Captain H. Perkins, of the American Navy, ami is said to be worth £7,000,000 sterling in her own right. To-day we publish an advertisement from Mr Gamman, in which he informs the public that the Bunnythorpe Sawmill is now open. As Mr Gamman has a splendid totara bush at' his command his future success is certain, especially as timber has now an upward tendency. The defalcations of Bisley, of Motueka, who committed suicide a short time ago, amount as far as the Friendly Societies are concerned, to £800, viz., Odd Fellows about £360 ; Foresters £400. His assets amount to £1000 — of course his wife and family will be left penniless. St. Valentine's Day is near at hand, so Mr Carthew has his shop window decorated with some of the most startling and unique specimens that it has ever been our good fortune to witness; but the cream of the selection is to be found inside for private selection. As the supply is large and various, early applicants will make the best choice^ •' - ! The Masterton Borough Council proposes to construct gas works within that town, and to raise . a sum of £10,000, for the purpose (says the Wairarapa ; Daily) under special loan and to pledge the gas works as security. It is fan enterprise which may be made profitable to the Borough and relieve rather than increase the burden borne by tKe ratepayers. A new custom, which originated in Russia, is to be introduced into ; Paris society this winter. It is that alt balls each pair shall,, in waltzing, only make one round of the room, and that, this having been done, each gentlemen shall •be obliged to seek another lady: The object of the reform is said to be to prevent flirting. ■ ■ ''' - '- ■ - - Cardinal Manning lately addressed a largely-attended meeting of the Sheffield branch, of the League of the Cross on temperance. He drew a picture of the evils of excessive drinking, for which, he said, there were - two remedies; ■ One of these was of a legislative character, and he i was strongly on . the side of local option. The other was of a personal character, and: he urged total, abstinence as the only safe path. ; A Wellington paper says the two tank engines which arrived per the s.s. lonic to the order of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway are to be sent by steamer to Wanganui, whore, they will be fittod-up in the Government workshops at Aramoto. The engines- are intended to work at the other end of the line ]at Longburn, and when put together will be driven along the Government line. as. far as Palmerston North, whence they will be transferred to the. company's junction with' the Government Railway. Messrs Berry and Healdhare been tlie successful tenderers for the erection of the Sunday School at St. John's Church Robert Belfit, a pedestrian, was arrested in Wellington on Saturday, on a warrant, issued at Feilding, charging him with wife desertion. The following is the result of the election of a school committee at Manjjaone : — Mr Eng, chairman, seccretary and trea surer; Messrs Pleasants, Smith, Nillson. Paterson, Stewart and Gnrlick committee. Mr Macarthur, M.TT.R., will address his constituents at i aimers ton. on Mon dny. at Feilding on Tuesday, at Halcotnbe on 1 liursday, and at Ash urst on Friday ensuing. At tlie last Government parade, at Wanganui, Vol. Churton the rifle champion was presented with the National Kifle Association medal and his rifle was purchased by the corps from the Government. Captain Edwin telegraphs to-day : — Barometer — Further fall at 'all places north of Lyttelton and Hokitika, but rise after 12 hours. Sea heavy on both coasts. Warnings for gales have beeu sent to all stations. When the noon train for Palmerston to-day was going over th«* Gladst>ne-st. crossing, it run into a flock of geese. There was a s altering of feathers, and. loud expostulation on the part of the birds, but no fatalities occurred. Agent* or subscribers desiring extra copies will please send notice at once. Mr Thomas It. Chamberlain haa been appointed sole manager of the business formerly carried on by his late father, Mr W. E. Chamberlain, at the steam flour mills, Kimboiton road. In consequence of the long illness of the latter, tlie former has already had the xn-innge-ment of the business for some time past, so that no change will take place in the working of the mill. Now that the Bole man-tgement of the business, however, falls into the hands of the eldest von, we have every confidence of its being conducted with the same satisfaction and success as has been the case for so many years past.
