Fatal Fire at Auckland
XPEB UNITED PEKBS ASSOCIATION. 1 Auckland, This Day.
A fire broke out at midnight in Elliott street, in a two-storey block of buildings. One of the workshops was rented by J. H. Holmes, scene artist of the Opera House, who slept in the front room. The flames were soon extinguished, and as Holmes was not seen, a search was made upstairs, where the body of the poor old man was found lying on its back; The ■kin had peeled off in s ct'tons though ihe body was not scorched or burnt. An examination' showed that Holmes had been reading in bed, and fell asleep leaving a candle lighted. -When aroused by the fire he had evidently made his way to his back room, instead of the staircase, when he was overcome by the moke and Suffocated.
