Accident on Manawatu Railway Works
♦ -. THEEE MEN BURIED IN TUNNEL. iPEB UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.! Wellington, January JS*-' About four o'clock this afternoon an accident occurred on the Wellington- . Manawatu Railway Company's works at Put era v, about 24 miles from town, and' which resulted in three men being buried underneath a fall of earth in a tunnel. It appears that 12 men were, working ;in a tunnel in Mr P. Brown's contract, when the timber suddenly gave way, and a large quantity of earth fell. Nine of the men managed to escape, but the other three were, when the last renort was despatched to town, still entombed. There names are Peter George, Henry Lloyd, and Matfcew, Penzadeth, The voice of the last named can be heard, and he states that he can hear one of - the other unfortunate men groaning, but is unable to tell which. Dr Gillon left in the steamer Tui this morning, and will be landed close to the spot where the accident occurred. This Day. The relief gang at Pukerau have nncovered Pandazeth sufficiently to allow of nourishment being given him. It is j not expected that the other men wi |be j rescued. alive. .
