The Riverton champion sculling match turned out a hollow affair. A punctual start was made, the wind bein^ jrather strong and the water choppy. At ~ the start Harrington got ahead, but by bad steering lost bis advantage, and Hearn entered the narrows 50 yards ahead. Just as Hearn was clearing the narrows Harrington's boat swamped, and he gave up the race after covering about half the distance. Hearn then leisurely pulled home, the time being 30 minutes, There was the largest crowd of people that had ever been seen in Riverton, numbering fully' 3,000 people. An impression got abroad that Harrington had been guilty of foul play, but those who saw the accident and knew him be9t including Hearn's backers, scouted the idea, and agreed that the swamping was purely accidental.
