The Shanghai correspondent of the Japan Gazette says : — "Two or three days before the naval engagement at Pagoda anchorage on August 23, Pilot Thomas was ashore at the Custom-house, and was talking to some of the officers about the expected hostilities. One of the Customs officers asked Thomas where he would have to be stationed on board the flagship Volta during the battle. Thomas replied by saying that he had put that question to Admiral Courbet. The Admiral's reply was : * You will have to be on the bridge with mo.' Thomas, who was ve.y stout, while the Admiral is the reverse, jocularly told the Customs officers that he had said to the Admiral : 'You are so thin that they couldn't hit you, but I am so stout that they couldn't miss me V And so it came to pass. The first shot from the Yang-wu passed over the bridge of the Volta, killing Pilot Thomas, while Admiral Courbet, who stood beside him, must have had a miraculous escape."
