Feilding Sports
» Committee : Messrs Sherwill, Macarthur, Worsfold, P. Bartholomew, Downes, Butherford, Lethbridge, Bray, W. Bailey, Walter Bailey, and Sandilands. Treasurer : Mr H. E. FitzHerbert. Secretary : Mr Edmund Goodbehere. Yesterday morning broke with every indication of a wet day, but after a sharp shower the cleared up, aud with the exception of a sprinkling in the afternoon remained fine for the rest of the day. At an early hour passengers by train, horse, foot, and every kind and description of wheeled vehicle, began to flock on the ground, so that by noon the purchasers of the gate and lawn privileges were satisfied they were going to have '* good value-" By one o'clock upward s of 2000 persons were in attendance. The lawn presented a very charming appearance with the numerous and tastefully dressed ladie. and children who graced the scene with their presence. The dancing platform was well patronised, and the whole proceedings were marked with the utmost decorum. The Feilding Brass Band played some excellent dance music, and select pieces at the intervals ; many favorable comments were made on the continued improvement ofthe players. The merry-go-round, the flying swinx, and several other amusing games were liberally supported. The hack steeplech'ise was a "great event," and the interest taken was intense. The tails were numerous, but as the ground was soft, and the pace slow, no one was inj ured. Since their inception 9 years ago there has not been so large an attendance at the sports. Competitors were present from every part of the colony, and it most be _ cry gratifying to the members of the committee to know that bigh encomiums were passed on their conduct of the business by men who were really capable of forming an opinion, and could draw comparisons with other similar meetings in the colony. There was not a single hitch or contretemps of auy .kind. Subjoined is a list of the events : — 1» 200 Yards Handicap.— To be competed for by persons who have been resident or working in the Oroua or Manawatu Counties during the thremonths previous to the race. the final heat Belfit ani Grcenside came in so close behind the first man, and were so near together, that there were different opinions as to which had second place. Considering the state of the ground the race was altogether a pood one. 2. Boys Race, 200 yards; under 14 years.— lst prize, Ll ; 2nd, 10s. Watts 1, Pleasants 2, Christ nsen 3. These were the only boys in the race. W.itts as usual showed good running, and made a very easy win, though Pleasants also ran well. Time, 25see. 3. This was a capital race, the men keeping well together. The first two men came in at a tie, but King was declared first by the judges. The start, however, was not first class, the field not being at all in a good line. 4. Quoits.— lst prize, Ll 10s ; 2nd, 10s. 9 entries. Allen 1, Simpson 2. In this event there was some of the best playing ever seen on the gronnd. 5 Sack Race, 100 yards.—lst prize, L 2; 2nd, 10s. 5 entries— doll ins, Morgan, H Laing, Martina, Joe (Maori). The latter, however, when he saw his men backed out of it, and wouldn't race — " not for Joe." This was an amusing event, and j Laing, as was expected, won easily. MarI tina being close behind, although he fell once, and Morgan being third man Collins was nowhere, as he tripped when half way down the course. 6. 100 Yards Handicap. —lst prize, L 5; L 5 ; 2nd, Ll . After the fifth lap Hodge again got in front, and continued to gain ground considerably till the end of the seventh lap, wh/>n Quin got pnst Smith, nnd was only about thn c yards behind Hod!;'* at the close. Smith was disqualified, and the race was declared as follows : — Hodge 1, Joseph Quin 2, Belfit 3. Time, 15sec. 8. Open Quarter-mile Handicap. — Ist prize, L 5 ; 2nd, L 2. 10 entries— Waite. Julian, Organ, Pirani, Holmes, King, McDonnell, Costall, Taylor, Atkinson. Taylor took the lead at first, but was soon overtaken by King, who then led all through, and was first in, but was declared disqualified for not properly breasting the tape, the race thus being given to Organ, who together with the other two men certainly ran well. Much sympathy w-is justly folt.for King, who certainly would have well deserved what would have been an easy win had he not inadvertently infringed the rules. Organ 1, Taylor 2, Atkinson 3 ; time, 59sec. 9. Vaulting with Pole. —Ist prize, L 2 2nd, Ll. 4 entries — Allen, Julian, Martina, H. Laing.
