Kiwitea Sports

These annual sports were held on tlic 24th in a paddock kindly lent for the j o casion hy Mr George Ct. Death, about a mile above the Cheltenham Hotel, and undoubtedly would havo proved a great success, if it had not been for the wretched state of the weather. About 150 persons were on the ground, Feilding being well represented by the local peels, Air S. Daw and Mr Morphy, arriving on the ground with two well-packed brakes. The Ist event on the list was the District Steeplechase ot 5 soys, which wt-s won by War Hawk, healing Mr Tyrrman's Nell. 6 others also ran and considering the heavy state of the course took all the jumps remarkably well. The favorite in this race was Mr James Wrights bay horse Kiwi, and no doubt would have won the rade, had he not baulked at the Grsfc hurdle. 2- Maiden, 150 yards. _ entries — Barrow, Batten, Luston, Tyreman. This race should have been a gift for Batten, but he fell twice, and so was quite out of it. Barrow 1, Tyie nan 2. 3. Boys Kace, 250 yards. 5 entries — Bellve, Higgics, Arnott, Tyrrmau, and Sexton— This was a very good race. Tyrrman 1, Sexton 2. 4. Open Steeplechase of 5 soys. Thia event like tde previous horse race caused great amusement, in fact had it not been for the two horse races the other events were very tame, as the rain was coining down in torrents the whole day. 5 horses put in an appearance. Patent Safety had it all his own way, and won several lengths in front of Mr Stuart's Monty. Running High Jump.— 3 entries for this event, the winner being H. Laing, who easily cleared 4ft Bui. 6. Walking Maich, 1 mile handicap. 3 entries — R. Belfit scratch, Bamber 30 yards, Hodge 15. Hodge 1, Belfit 2. 7. Hurdle Race, 250 yards, over 6 -flights of hurdles. 4 entries — Barrow won easily, with H. Laing 2nd. 8. J mile handicap. Laing scratch' Ryan scratch, Tyreman 8 yards, Gardner 12 yards. Ryan l,Lamg2. At this time, 4 o'clock, the committee very wisely brought thejsports to a conclusion, although there were several other events advertised to ccme off. During the day the Makino Brass Band kept things as lively as they could by playing some excellent music. Mr Stuart had the refreshment booth and seemed to be driving a very lively trade.
