Christmas Shows

The decorations on Tuesday evening last were on a limited scalo so far as the number of shops was concerned, „ and the number of sightseers was much smaller than was anticipated. Mr Gichard's establishment was one of the principal attractions of the evening, especially as opposite his door the Feilding Brass Band performed to the entertainment of the numerous listeners and onlookers. Here was displayed some splendid beef from Mr Riddiford's, of Halcombe, mutton from Mr W. Baker, Makino, lamb from Mr J. Whisker,' veal from Mr Holden, the latter being worthy of special mention. There was also some excellent pork, sucking pigs and poultry, all of Mr Gichard's own breeding. Mr Rutherford had some really fine beef from the Douglas estate, mutton Mr Saxon, veal from Mr Arnott, lamb from Mr Tyreman, Kiwitea, and pork of his own feeding. Both these establishments were very prettily decorated and lighted up. Mr Eade had a good show of all kinds off urniture, including some specially •well executed pieces of workmanship, and outside,' the shop -was an illuminated contrivance by which Mr Eado -wished all his friends a "merry Christmas," &c. Mr Pollock's window wasreplete with various luxuries for the festive table. Mr Young's shop was nicely decorated, and here were to be seen so many good things, that to enumerato them -would be an almost endless task. The same might be said of tho shops of ■*" Mr Carthew, and of Messrs Summers '" and Mayhew, where there was the greatest choice of useful and fancy articles of almost every description. The next day we noticed that the shops of Messrs Crichton, Thompson, Thomson, Cottrell, Svensden, Brown, Lewers, Keen, Fowles, Higgin, Henry, Haybittle, Pringle and others, put on their usual holiday appearance.
