Profits of Wattle Cultivation
We (Bruce Herald) hare often Wondered why no experiments have been made in this district in the cultivation of the wattle. The Riversdale Manufacturing -Company at Auckland has 30 acres planted. The manager recently stripped a 4-year-old tree, and 'tlie bark when dried yielded : /561b. This would, gire about 90 tons per_acre for f >ur or fire years', growth, j Bark is quoted at,L6; to L 8 10s p^r ton, chopped, and' bagged. This is' an unusually low' figure, but taking the mean of these, two prices, viz., L 7 lOs, the gross value of »'i ; ye ; a>'s : cr6p> would be nearly L7OO, which represents a yearly value of about of about L 175 fromione acre of land. '"> The cost: of seed and cultivation is very trivial. The value Df tbe trees as firewpod.—andyit is the bestm the world— would, we think, far more than cover all; expenses of cultivation, stripping, &c. " '•
