The rioters then marched through the city yelling derisively in front of every Protestant church. A serious riot occurred at a mining village of Coal Island, in the suburbs of | Dunganon County, Tyrone, on November 1 16. While bein^ far from good Catholics the colliers are bitter haters of Protestants, and to show their feeling they attacked the church and drove the Protestant worshippers out, assaulted them with clubs and stoned every Protestant they could find, and held possession ot the village for two hours. They were dispersed by a police force from Dunganon. A Hung Kong despatch says the reports of a French victory in Formosa are fabrications and their successes in Tonquin are overrated. The French invaders are at a standstill and their operations are confined to a small territory. The Chinese are assuming the offensive ia both Tonquin, and Formosa. Before the French can resume the aggressive they must have an additional 15.000 men in Tonquin, an.l IO.OiJO in Formosa. An expedition to Pekin will be cheaper in the matter of both men and money.
