LATER PARTICULARS.

Some excitement was caused at North East Valley last evening by a report of attempted oiurderand suicide. Itappears that Bancliop Jacob Vandyke shot Mary Ann Wadsworth, wounding her slightly, and afterwards attempted to take his own life. A party was being held in Cameron's Upper Junction Hotel, a dozen or more pet-pie being present, including Miss Wadsworth. Shortly after nine Vandyke entered the room where the company were dancing, and to< ka seat at the side of the room, but almost immediately rose to his feet and presenting a revolver, fired at Miss Wadsworth, who was danciaz at the time. The bullet grazed the *id<> ©I her neck, inflicting a slight wound, and she fell into the arms of her partner. Vandyke seeing the first shot had not taken effect, took aim with intention of firing again, but the revolver missed fire. He ihen attempted to shoot himself, but being rushed by the bystanders the muzzle of the revolver was forced downwards and the ball entered the floor. Vandyke was then secured and police sent for* Dr Martin was also sent for and ascertained Miss Wadsworth's injury to be slight, and would be quite well in two or three days. On searching Vandyke at the lock-up a packet of cartridges were found. The prisoner is a gardener. He is a German by bit tn, and about 45 years of age. Vandyke is believed to have paid addresses to her. She rejected him an'l he became jealous..
