An Outside View of Wellington's Future
• The Timaru Herald, noticing, but not approving Mr Toxw.ird's suggestion that an Kxhibition bulding, to be afterwards used as a railway station, should be erected says : — In the course of a few months, the Wellington and Manawatu railway will be open, and the traffic at Wellington will be very great. The construction of the Trunk line, moreover, will make an immense difference in a year er two. In short, the whole of the railway arrangements at Wellington will have to undergo a complete change before very long ; but what that change will be, cannot pos>ibly be determined at present. Our own belief is that the opening of railway com munication between Wellington and the West Coast and the intedor will produce results such as have not been realised as yet, and such as have not beon experienced in other parts of the colony. In Wel lington there is practically no communication, except of the rudest and most backward description, between the port — one of the finest in the world — and the rich districts along the ceast and inlanii to west and north west. The opening of the new line, which is destined to make Wellington the centre of the railway system of the North Island, will virtually, therefore, give the country distriet an adequate seaward outlet for exports for the first time ; and the effects of that we are convinced, will ho somewhat startling.
