Cotton, the three young men who had been arrested on suspicion of having outraged the woman on Monday night last under circumstances of extraordinary brutality, were to-day committed for trial, charged with criminal assault. Uunedin, This Day. A man named James Anderson, a farmer at Ida Valley, is suppoaod to have been drowned at Clyde yesterday afternoon. Ho arrived in Clyde to see the doctor, and was on his way to the hospital when he was observed to descend the river bank, take off his coat and vest, and walk into the river .I'lutha. Auckland, This Day. John Taylor, greengrocer, formerly a farmer at ' __aiapoi and Taranaki in which latter district he lost heavily,! attempted to commit suicide Thursday night by taking laudanum. The act was owing to depression of spirits. He is now recovering. Edward Durant has been committed for trial on a charge of stabbing Francis Durant, a French, seaman. A deputation, which included Messrs Mitcbelson and Buckland, M.H.R.'s waited upo*_ the Minister of Jan tice urging the inclusion of Kawhia iu the district over which the sale of drink is to be prohibited.
