Henry Lewis, better known as the hangman, was arrested to-day on a charge of breaking into the Brunner Coal Mining Company's offices, and remanded till Monday. This Day. Six of the nine men arrested in connection with the Porirua whiskey cases have been released, the amounts due b y them having been paid. July has been scratched for the Wellington Gold Cup. The Dunodin Trades and Labor Council have urged the Government to introduce a clause into the mail contracts, prohibiting the employment ef Chinese crews. Mr Locke addressed his constituents last night. He strong urged improvement in local government, encouragement to to local industries, and above all, settlement of native land difficulties by the Government consolidating and amending the Bill next session, which should more particularly effect improvements as to subdi-isions. A unanimous vote of thanks and confidence was passed. Chbistcjiu bch, This Day. W. T. A. Tyrrell, William Peacock, and John A. Cotton, the three young men who had been arrested on suspicion of having outraged the woman on Monday night last under circumstances of extraordinary brutality, were to-day committed for trial, charged with criminal assault. Uunedin, This Day. A man named James Anderson, a farmer at Ida Valley, is suppoaod to have been drowned at Clyde yesterday afternoon. Ho arrived in Clyde to see the doctor, and was on his way to the hospital when he was observed to descend the river bank, take off his coat and vest, and walk into the river .I'lutha. Auckland, This Day. John Taylor, greengrocer, formerly a farmer at ' __aiapoi and Taranaki in which latter district he lost heavily,! attempted to commit suicide Thursday night by taking laudanum. The act was owing to depression of spirits. He is now recovering. Edward Durant has been committed for trial on a charge of stabbing Francis Durant, a French, seaman. A deputation, which included Messrs Mitcbelson and Buckland, M.H.R.'s waited upo*_ the Minister of Jan tice urging the inclusion of Kawhia iu the district over which the sale of drink is to be prohibited. The Minister said he was nnder the impression that Kawhia was included, but would telegraph to the Native Minister for information.
