The amount of m*-.rtgae*e paid off during . the same period was £2,033,041, and the amount remain--1 ing secursd by mortgage on the 31st March last waa £24,412,34:1. The amount of money secured by the new morgages in 1883-84 Was only about ! two-thirds the amount in 1882-83.
