The Election Petition

In the matter of the p.^tifion against the election of Mr James Bull and M r Peteb Stewart as Councillors for the Orouu Riding of the Manawalu County, anil which resulted in the upsetting of the election at the official enquiry held at Bulls before Mr Wabd, R.M., tl.e sympathies of a majority of the ratepayers

must go with the gen; leuien who are thus unseated. Not only do they lose their seats, but they are saddled with Iho costs of the enquiry, wliicli amount to something over £5. The hardship chiefly consists in (.he frict that they were in no wav responsible for the causes winch led to this result. The KoUirninjf ' IGcur, who appears to be v well-meaning but simple-minded sort of person, with a

wholesome terror of '* those placed in authority oror him," managed to get into a fog about his "days and dates." and in trying to get out of the difficulty made matters worse. At the same lime it must be admitted he had his instructions from the Clerk of the County (Mr McOulloch) whose interpretations of some of the clauses in the Counties Act appear to differ from those of Mr Ward, the R.M. We hope that Messrs Pull and Stewabt will come forward again as candidates. Should they so decide, we have every confidence that the result of the contest will place them first on the poll. They arc both eminently suited for the position, are perfectly independent, and have no " axe to grinJ."
