A Sweep Story
The Thames Advertiser has the following : — M An interesting incident has been related to us anent the recent sweepstake speculations in connection with the Mclbourne Cup race. A short time ago a person who owed a sum of money to a local tradesman, found himself unable to discharge the debt when settlement was demanded, but handed to his creditor the onlj articles of any value in his possession, namely, two crumpled consuliation tickets on the great sporting event. These the tradesman was fain to accept, the other merely stipulating that if the tickets proved valuable beyond the amount of the debt, proceeds should be fairly divided between them. Nothing further was thought of the matter until Wednesday, when the holder of tlie tickets received a telegram from the sweep promotpr, onnvoymg the pleasing intelligence that Malua had been drawn in respect of one of them. The tradesmen and his co- parlor in the transaction will, therefore, have the satis f.ic' ion of sharing the net sura of £203 on the arrival of (he Melbourne files verifying the telegraphed result of the race."
